Former Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer Remembered as a Gentleman

Former Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer, only the second black Mayor ever elected in Chicago was remembered by more than 800 yesterday, as a gentleman who championed civility in one of the darkest periods in Chicago's history.

Sawyer was mayor for just 16 months (1987-1989) after being voted in by the City Council in 1987, filling the gap between two larger-than-life mayors: Washington and Daley. Sawyer lost the democratic nomination to Daly in 1989 and Daly has been in office ever since.

Sawyer's tenure was not without controversy like most politicians, but unlike most, he steered clear of it and dealt with business at hand while staying above the fray. The Chicago Tribune's piece on Mayor Sawyer is here.
